The countdown is on for the fourth annual open water swim on July 23-24 around Great Keppel which offers a family fun day on Great Keppel Island (GKI).
“This is an amazing event both on and off the water.
“In addition to the swim this year, we are offering two spectator cruises, to be involved and cheer on the swimmers from the comfort of the Freedom Fast Cat ferries.
“Locals and visitors alike are encouraged to get on board and be part of the fun. There is an abundance of free on-island activities in place, including water polo, a scavenger hunt and sandcastle building.
“For those looking to participate but maybe not up to the 20km swim just yet, places are still available for tandems, duo and team relays, as well as the open water 5km swim around Middle Island, registrations for these events close this coming Monday May 30.”
Mr Kalmikovs, who comes from a family of swimmers said GKI is one of the most wonderful places in the world to swim.
“In winter the water is crystal clear, and you can see everything, you swim over coral beds and get to see an abundance of fish, dugongs, turtles and dolphins,” he said.
“My first swim around GKI in 2012 was simply magical, I anticipated the swim to take 7/8 hours and it only took 5 hours.
“On my second swim, I swam with a family of dugongs swimming under me, it was an amazing experience. Each time you do the swim around the island is different with an ever-changing landscape of marine life to enjoy.
“The annual swim is all about embracing our beautiful habitat, it is not a race but rather just an incredibly enjoyable experience.
“When I see the faces of the people coming out of the water after completing the swim, the smiles on faces are irreplaceable.
“There is a sense of camaraderie and huge satisfaction in completing the swim.
“When we have enjoyed an amazing day on the water, you can sit back and relax with live music both Saturday and Sunday nights on GKI.”
